WHY DO CATS EAT GRASS?
Whether you are owned by an indoor or outdoor cat, your feline friend has probably nibbled on grass. There is no evidence grass will harm cats and many experts theorize munching on greens can be beneficial for your cat.
Cats regurgitate grass because they lack the necessary enzymes to break down vegetable matter. Allowing your cat to eat grass in small portions is helpful in reduction or elimination of vomiting the grass.
The juices in grass contain folic acid which is essential for a cat’s bodily functions and assists in the production of hemoglobin, the protein that moves oxygen in the blood.
Another theory is that grass acts as a natural laxative, counteracting any cases of indigestion. As cats clean themselves, fur is swallowed and moved into the digestive tract. Kitties need a little help to break it down and pass it. Cats instinctively know a little bit of grass may just go a long way in cleaning out its system.
Whether kitty is in indoor cat or an outdoor cat, we need to have only NON-TOXIC plants in our homes. A small tray of cat grass gives kitty an alternative to the outdoor grass which could lead to accidental ingestion of pesticides, herbicides or chemicals that may have been used to treat your or your neighbor’s yard.
